About Me

Hello,

my name is Kathy! I am the person behind this small one woman business.

I am 26 years old, and I started spraying books at the beginning of 2020, after deciding to not pursue the degree I chose for University. After I graduated school the year before, I rediscovered my love for reading. I used to read a lot as a child, but stopped reading for enjoyment some time during my school years. Now I was older and more educated, I decided, if I am going to get back into reading, I'd like it to be with English Books. Reading the german translation of books was fine while I was younger, but I much rather wanted to read the original works now.

It didn't take long after I joined the Bookstagram and BookTube community to discover special editions. Especially the ones with colored edges stole my heart. But, I had just quit University, and did not have a job at the moment, so purchasing copies of books overseas and having them shipped to me, was just not in my budget.

I have always enjoyed art, so I wanted to try spraying book edges myself, especially with the start of the pandemic, there was not much else to do. It seemed like a nice idea to try this out while trying to figure out what to do next, job/ uni/ career wise. So I bought some equipment and collected materials from past art hobbies, and started experimenting. It only took a few tries to get the initial hang of it, and I haven't looked back since.

I worked hard and learned and experimented every day. Soon I was sharing my sprayed books on my Bookstagram account. The positive feedback I started getting made this journey so much more exciting and I am so grateful for those people who have been supporting me from the beginning. I kept spraying my books for weeks and months. I kept trying new things, like gradient designs — keep in mind this was the very beginning of the sprayed edges era in the book world, and solid color edges were all there was at that point — and soon after I worked on the first stencil design (which I vividly remember to this day: dragon scales).

At this point I started to get requests and questions about if I could possibly spray copies from other people, and adding the edges to my books gave me an indescribable amount of joy, that I wanted to share that joy with other people. I never expected this to happen — this started out as a hobby, just for myself. I researched what I had to do to make this a Shop, and made it happen. I was the first ever shop to offer customized edges! :)

That was 6 years ago now, and I sprayed several thousands books before I switched to printed edges! Yes, I kept an ongoing list of every book I have ever sprayed — I do really like my lists haha.

My Shop and my work is evolving constantly. I try out things a lot and learn new methods and techniques, all through experience — I am completely self taught. My work means everything to me, I am very proud of the progress I made and the point where I am now; it certainly has not been easy. I give my best every day to make it possible for book lovers out there to feel the same joy of seeing their favorite book customized, that I experienced when I started.

I have met so many amazing people through my Shop and the book community in general, some of them have become very important to me in my every day life, and it's truly incredible to be part of this community.

I invested in a printer in 2024 to be able to offer much more detailed edges than I ever could when I was creating stencils for designs and handspraying everything. This has been its own big challenge in ways I did not expect, but I am so no matter what life tries to throw my way, I will continue to put everything into this shop!

Offering printed edges meant almost completely relearning how to design my edges, and it took quite a while to figure it out, but I adore the endless options I am now able to create. I add new books at least once a month now during my so called "reveal week" and it is so much fun every time!
I have also started offering my services to authors and am doing lots of collabs with authors and indie authors, whether that is creating editions for them to sell or to add to my shop. Working directly with authors has been such a joy for me and has become a big part of my work.

I absolutely love how far this shop and I have come, doing all this work all by myself for so many years now. No matter how long I've been doing this, I still treasure every order just as much as I did in the beginning! I think as a small business it is very important to pay extra attention to quality, details and other important things like eco friendly but safe proper packaging. That and our commitmnent to our customers truly can set us apart from all the huge companies offering mass produced edges. And that is what I strive to do every single day I have the privelege of this being my job thanks to all the lovely readers out there ❤️
